It is now law that any caregiver who works for home care company must register with the State and they must be associated with a home care organization that has a license.
The following is a step by step process for Home Care Aides (Non-medical home care Caregivers) to be registered with the state.
Step 1: Check to see if you are already fingerprinted
Call the following number and find out if they are already fingerprinted 1-877-424-5778.
Anyone who has worked for an assisted living facility should already be fingerprinted.
If you have been fingerprinted skip to step 3.
Step 2: Get fingerprinted through livescan
Download, print, and fill out the the lic9163 form located here:
And get the Facility/Organization Number from the company or look it up here:
Now look up a LiveScan location online and make an appointment. Take the LIC9163 document to the livescan/fingerprinting location. The fee is usually around $60 for the service.
Step 3: Register with the state as a Home Care Aide (Caregiver)
You have 2 options to register which both require a payment of $35
Option 1: BY MAIL
Fill out the following 2 documents and mail it in with the $35 fee
Option 2: ONLINE (Requires a credit credit card)
Step 4: Associate Home Care Aide (Caregiver) with Home Care company (Done by Home Care Organization)
The home care company is responsible for associating the Caregiver with their organization by filling out the following form .
Step 5: Verify all information with the state
Once finished call the official line (1-877-424-5778) to verify you are registered with the state and make sure you are associated with the correct Home Care agency.
There are many other things a Home Care Organization must do in California to meet licensing standards for their Caregivers including but not limited to training and a record of a recent TB test. However these are not required during the home care aide registration process for California.
